CWeek 5 Under the Big Top
August 6, 2018
Dear Camp Wanaqua Families,
The fourth week of camp was designated Pirate week. Campers started off the week on Monday playing pirate games, and decorated their own treasure chests. Tuesday, campers participated in a scavenger hunt to find out their secret trip on Wednesday. Wednesday, we enjoyed food, fun, and games at Dave and Buster’s in Pelham Bay. Finally on Thursday, we boarded the ship Manhattan (Classic Harbor Line Cruises), and cruised down the Hudson and were able to view the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline from a different vantage point. Campers did not have to swab the deck, or walk the plank!!!!!
This week is designed a little different. We have the opportunity to take 3 trips this week. On Monday, August 6th we are heading to Madison Square Garden to attend a New York Liberty Basketball game. Lunch will be provided. I have worked directly with the marketing manager; our seats will be as close to the action as we are allowed.
Tuesday, August 7th, we are spending the day on campus. Please make sure your camper brings a bathing suit and towel for fun in the pool. To enhance the camper’s daily living skills in the kitchen, we will be preparing lunch to show our gratitude to the bus drivers, matrons, and administration. As Eileen Caddy stated, “Gratitude helps you to grow and expand; gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and into the lives of all those around you.” After food preparation, our guests are served, we will be dining and socializing with our guests. Lunch will be provided.
On Wednesday, August 8th we will be heading to Elmsford, NY to attend a private event at Bounce U. If you have not yet sent in the waiver, please do so. If your child does not have the signed waiver, they will not be allowed to “bounce” on the inflatables. It is also extremely important that your child wears socks. Children will not be allowed to “bounce” wearing shoes, or barefoot. Lunch will be provided.
Thursday, August 8th, we will be going to Jamaica Bay Riding Academy. We will be learning how to groom, bridle, and saddle the horses before we go riding. Campers will go horseback riding in the arena paired with trained personnel. Please be aware that if your child has allergies to dogs or cats, they will most likely be allergic to the horses as well. I will pack bug spray, the owner warned me that the location can often be very buggy. Since we will be riding, I recommend that campers wear a pair of pants to assist in their comfort. Lunch will be provided.
I cannot believe the camp season is coming to a close. I would like to cordially invite you to attend the Camp Barbecue on Tuesday, August 14th. Activities will start at 10:30, and end at 12:30. I am certain your children have been telling you about all of the fun they have had a Camp Wanaqua this summer, here is your opportunity to witness the fun in person. As a reminder, you can locate photos of the fun we are having at camp at the following website, www.campwanaqua2018.weebly.com. The same images can also be found at www.nyise.org.
As always, if you have any questions the best way to reach me is via email [email protected]. There is a phone in the building, but I am usually with your campers, that number is 718-519-7000 Ext 538. If you happen to be transferred to the switchboard ask foe extension 356, you may leave me a message, I will return your call.

Week 4 Pirate Week
July 30, 2018
Dear Camp Wanaqua Families,
The third week of camp was filled with activities and trips relating to Weird Science. Campers started off the week with drawing or describing a scientist. Of the 14 campers, 12 of the campers drew/explained male scientists. I find this to be very interesting! On campus, campers had the opportunity to make homemade lava lamps (experiment on density), play-doh, slime, elephant toothpaste (catalyst), and their favorite vanilla ice cream root beer floats (solid, liquid, and gas). All experiments except for the elephant tooth paste and the ice cream (in their bellies) were sent home to enjoy further.
We journeyed to The Liberty Science Center where campers enjoyed simulation activities, an exhibit called “Grossology” where campers were provided sensory experiences or the “gross” things that happen in the human body. We all wish that we could have more time to explore all that the museum offered. Next time!!!!
On Thursday, we went to Applebee’s in Bay Plaza and had a tour or the kitchen, and enjoyed a delicious lunch. Many of the elements of the expanded core curriculum were addressed; social interaction skills, independent living skills, and orientation and mobility. Campers were given the opportunity to place their orders, socially interact with campers, and orient themselves safely around the kitchen while receiving direction from the Applebee’s management.
As always we will be swimming on Monday and Tuesday, lunches should be brought unless otherwise instructed.
This week, July 30 – August 2ndth is Pirate Week!!! On Wednesday, August 1st, campers do not have to bring a lunch. The trip is a secret location that the campers will find out tomorrow after participating in a scavenger hunt on campus. The trip is located in the Bronx; we will be leaving campus at 10:15 AM and returning back to campus by 2:00 PM. The campers will have a fun time “spending their loot” as they enjoy the facility for lunch and games for 3 hours.
On Thursday, August 2nd we are taking a Classic Harbor Line Cruise around the Statue of Liberty. It is imperative that campers bring their lunch to enjoy while we cruise along the Hudson River. This trip is rain or shine; make sure to dress your child accordingly (remember hat’s, sunglasses, and sunscreen). Since we are at the half way point of camp, and make sure to replenish your child’s sunscreen if it is running low.

Week 3 Weird Science
July 23, 2018
Dear Camp Wanaqua Families,
We had a great second week of camp! We started off the week with a Campers were ready for a Wet and Wild week at camp. Monday was a gorgeous day to participate in water relay races. Tuesday, we went to the movies to see The Incredibles 2. Wednesday we traveled to Norwalk, Connecticut to touch jelly fish, rock crabs, sand sharks, and sting rays in their touch tanks. We were also able to see seals and sharks up close at the Maritime Aquarium. Thursday was a perfect relaxing day back on campus for more water activities. The campers soaked each other, as well as the staff using crayon water sprayers, and had fun using the Slip and Slide and sprinklers.
The campers also practiced their ADL skills by making tropical smoothies. Campers had a choice of strawberries, bananas, or blueberries for their tropical smoothie. The camper chose the fruit they wanted to be included in their smoothie. They then washed the fruit, chopped/sliced, and added either yogurt or milk and put all of the ingredients in the blender. Each camper was responsible for making their own smoothie from start to finish. Everyone agreed, smoothies are Yummy!!!!
This week, July 23 – July 26th is Weird Science Week!!! The campers will have the opportunity to make many different science experiments throughout the week. Today we made homemade lava lamps, and homemade play doh, I have sent these experiments home for the campers to enjoy at home. All materials are non-toxic, but I have reminded the kids not to eat, or drink. As always we will be swimming on Monday and Tuesday, lunches should be brought unless otherwise instructed.
On Wednesday, July 25th we are heading to The Liberty Science Center. The science center is in New Jersey City, NJ. As soon as the campers arrive we will take off and head to New Jersey. It is important for your child to pack lunch, as I am not sure of food availability at the science center. Buses will leave directly from The Liberty Science Center, to bring the campers home.
On Thursday, July 26th we are heading to Applebee’s. Campers will be given a tour of the kitchen, and will be given a Junior Chef’s certificate at the end of their kitchen experience. Best thing is, we will be eating lunch at Applebee’s – there is no need to pack lunch.
As a reminder, you can locate photos of the fun we are having at camp at the following website, www.campwanaqua2018.weebly.com. The same images can also be found at www.nyise.org.
